Możemy zauważyć na okolicznych drzew budki (skrzynki lęgowe) dla ptaków. Zastępują one naturalne dziuple i służą za miejsca gniazdowe dziuplakom, np. sikorom, muchołówkom, szpakom, pleszkom, dzięciołom czy sowom (włochatce, sóweczce, puszczykowi). Lasy naturalne, składające się z drzew w różnym wieku, również martwych, oferują ptakom wiele schronień. Lasy przekształcone przez człowieka są ubogie w dziuple, co ogranicza występowanie dziuplaków.
 Budki służą też nietoperzom. Wykorzystują je jako kryjówki, letnie schronienia samotnych samców lub miejsca przebywania kolonii rozrodczych. Budki dla nietoperzy są inaczej zbudowane niż budki dla ptaków, gdyż mają otwór wejściowy w kształcie szczeliny umieszczonej na dole skrzynki.

Looking at the nearby trees we can spot nest boxes for various species of birds. They are a substitute for the natural hollows for such birds as titmice, flycatchers, starlings, common redstarts, woodpeckers or owls such as Tengmalm’s owl, the Eurasian pygmy owl and the towny owl. Natural forests consisting of different-aged trees and abounding with dead trees are places where birds can find many shelters. Forests reshaped by humans with some old and dead trees contain fewer hollows. Hanging out nesting boxes in the forest protects birds from their population being reduced; what is more, it increases the amount of appropriate nesting places for them. Bats use nesting boxes as well. They us them as hideouts, as shelters for males or as places for a nursery colony. Nesting boxes for bats are constructed in a different way than boxes for birds, the opening is in the shape of a crack and placed on the bottom of the box.
